I know, I know... "If Swartzy and Qarik jumped off a cliff, would you?" Ha ha...

Ok, so here are my photos of my kid on Easter.

Story behind these: She wasn't in the mood for photos... until she decided to make it a mother / daughter shoot. She was the mother... her dolly was the daughter... The photographer (me) was Grandma.

All natural window light...

I agree. Really beautiful b&w conversion. The doll's expression in the third works so well, too; love your daughter's expression as well! Cute!

Hehe....that's what we call "loop" lighting.

It really is perfect. It's all about the lighting isn't it? Someday I hope to get it worked out. As of now lighting is my nemesis.

Not wanting to steal Heather's thread but it may be appropriate to give an explanation as she has some nice examples here...then you can go an try this style of loop lighting:

By lighting from the side and above the subject pointed down (in this case CL). The shadow is to the side of the nose but not touching the lip. Making sure you illuminate the eyes, placement of the light as far as height pointing down is paramount...otherwise it will become more of a "rembrant" style light....to where there is the "triangle" on the cheek but the shadow side eye is not illuminated.

In portrait work, the eyes should be the big priority. So simply moving the light source from low to high (you can see this if using a modeling light) the shadow will "loop", illuminating the eye and not touching the lip.

An easy way to achieve this is have the light source just above the level of the nose....go try it...it's fun! :D:D:D

Thanks all! So ever since Easter she now calls me "grandma" for the benefit of her dolls.... it is too funny!

... And Swatzy: Teach away! iloveyou.gif I love a teachable moment that comes from rubbing elbows with you.

The best part about that spot in my livingroom is that it provides very soft loop light and a nice hair light /background separation from behind her to camera right! Bonus! You know you are sick when you walk in the room and are sure that the windows are all set where they are for your own lighting purposes.

Oh sure! I think they are pretty good in color too... though I wish someone had put the stack of audio books somewhere else, lol.

These are gorgeous! I love the processing and lighting. I've achieved this lighting befiore but never knew it was called "loop" lighting. Very interesting to learn! I always just thought it was a "light rembrant" look, lol! Love the idea of this series...and the grandma comments! ETA both color and bw processing are wonderful.
