Boy, are we looking at different monitors! Not to say you can't hate it, or dismiss it for any number of reasons, but it looks pretty damn 'poppy' on the Apple Cinema Display in my office, and on my laptop screen for that matter. But here's even poppier....

…her left foot being in the air implies movement! (shadow emphasizes that…)
…the lines across the pavement (sorry, sidewalk…) makes it look like she's running up the ladder of life!
…definitely B&W!
Nice job!

PS: On my monitor the tones are pretty good; not flat at all
But that's about all they do

Well, that's honest and direct.

Thanks, Wil - I think they may have flattened out crossing the Great Internet Wall of China.

Damn, there they go again with that desaturation filter at the firewall!
For what it's worth, the image still feels flat to me this morning (on my MBP matte screen). I really want the girl's shadow to be the dominant element in the B&W version and it doesn't feel strong enough. I guess the image doesn't do it for me.
Well that's fine. But it all seriousness, if I were you I would definitely check my screen adjustments. Right now I'm on a Blackberry, and even on that the contrast between girl and shadow POPS - particularly the bottom half of the shadow. If it were any darker it would look as though Eugene Smith had taken it and some meth into the darkroom and not emerged for three days.

The popping B&W is my favourite.
... I'm still peeling potatoes.
