Strategy for shooting outdoor festival

This may not be the right place for this question, so I apologise if it's not. I want to know about the strategy and techniques to use when trying to capture the atmosphere of an outdoor festival. I've tried in the past to capture in a still photo what seems too easy on video, but can't get it nailed down. I fail on the composition mostly.
