Good ones Paul - looks to me like a sawfly - the ones I've seen a fairly clumsy fliers so I supect it flying at you was completely unintentional (they are not vampiric AFAIK ) - Often have trouble distinguishing these from wasps.

Thanks Brian - I was hedging my bets toward sawfy from the headshape. Probably the Dolerus niger.

I got one in the camera a couple of years back if I remember rightly.
