Canon 400mm f/4.0 L non-DO Prototype

I thought I'd post some eye candy for the rest of us. :D
Too bad Canon never released such a lens.

But there is a picture showing it in 2000 when
the 400mm f/4 DO IS was announced.

(On top the 400mm f4 DO and below a 400mm f4 non-DO)

    Very curious. I suppose that a 400mm, f4 refractive would have been too close to the EF 500mm, f4.5L USM and EF 500mm, f4L IS USM in capability and would have been internally competitive to those lenses. The 500mm, f4L IS in particular has been a very good seller for Canon, so I doubt that anyone wanted to hurt its sales.
