I added an entry. Not the one that I think alot were expecting me too, but this one alot of preshot technical went into it. I don't think anyone can guess what it is other than I gave a hint in the title. But they would not guess the type of the object itself. It someone actually does I will let you know how I did it!
I don't know much of anything about macro and I do have macro tubes (kenkos 12mm, 20mm and 36mm). I used my 18-55mm kit lens with 58mm worth of tubes attached to it with the lens being at 48mm I believe. If someone could explain to me exactly what I did to the lens by adding the tubes (besides getting so extremely close) I would appreciate it. My camera info doesn't reflect the tubes being added. I am never too old to learn something new. However I love my entry and how it came out. I hope the judges do too...but its ok if they don't!
If I said you must all shoot a red shoe from the side only using one light positioned exactly 1 foot high and 45 degrees from perpendicular plus your F-stop must be F8 and shutter speed 1/125 of a second.
We would all know exactly what was expected but the challenge would be pretty boring.
I have torn apart my daughter's Barbie doll closet looking for a red shoe...none to be found. Guess Barbie only wears pink, white, and baby blue. I so wanted to use your exact technique just for fun and post it.

Jag - I am new here so havenvt been around long enough to get to know the personality behind Jag so I had no idea what you might post. In looking at your shot it is very intriguing. My first thought was lava but then i thought...kinda hard to shoot a macro shot of lava My next thought was maybe molten metal like at a factory...still I envision a melted lens before you would get the shot. My last thought is meringue like on top of a lemon cake, slightly burnt with a yellow filter but I have no clue what the red thing in the center is...i think that is key....
anyway, very nice shot...keeps my mind wandering for sure
edit - I just looked at your website...I now cant fathom what that is. you do some crazy but VERY interesting work.

I am almost tempted to do a red shoe challenge, but... I will spare everyone.
For fun it would be interesting to see. Right now my wife is coveting a pair of "perfect" red shoes so they happened to be on my mind.

Welcome to the group toybreaker and thank you! Well those are very good guesses but not what it is. No meringue or custard here!
from my previous question... If someone could explain to me exactly what I did to the lens by adding the tubes (besides getting so extremely close) I would appreciate it.
If I had a 48mm lens focal length and added 58mm worth of macro tubes...does all that mean is I had a lens equal too 106mm? If so how does the tubes work with no glass in them? By extending the lens away from the sensor abviously changes the focal point. But why doesn't an 106mm lens (or something simular) get the same results...I mean you can focus from a distance rather than having to be right up to the subject?

All the extension tubes do is allow you to focus much, much closer than normal. For instance, your 50mm lens may normally be able to focus ( at it's closest ) about 12" away, by adding extension tubes you will be able to focus a lot closer, but you wont be able to focus to infinity with the tubes installed.
So what is the point then? Well, by being able to focus a lot closer you can bring the subject much closer thereby making the subject much bigger in the viewfinder and therefore the resulting picture.
With enough extension tubes you are able to get greater than lifesize, 1:1, with just an ordinary lens ( ie not a dedicated macro lens ).
If you look at my dss#49 thread you can see a photo of my "cheapo" macro setup, including the bellows but not including the camera or the tripod, the whole setup cost less than £60.00 from E-bleh. With this I can fill the frame on a 1.6 crop sensor dslr with the eye of a normal sewing needle ( just the eye, not the rest of the needle ) which must be about 6 to 7 times lifesize.
The only downside to using a lot of extension tubes is that you need more and more light on the subject the more extensions you add, and of course the darker the viewfinder gets ( thank goodness for live view on my 7d )
Hope this answers you, I dont know much about extension tubes, but I'll happily share what I do know ( or at least what I think I know :D:D )
Thanks Tim. That sufficiently explains what I was trying to understand. My cheapo ext. tubes seem to get pretty close...although I have to put the lens right up to the subject and manually focus. And sometimes I get stuff smeared on my lens from doing that!...lol. But It works for what I do. I have seen over on the Macro board some pretty awesome shots...especially from one guy...Brian V. who just wows me on how close he really gets on bugs and stuff. Thanks again for your explinations.

Brian (LordV) is an outstanding macro photographer, I love his work. It was seeing his work that got me interested in macro and introduced me to focus stacking.
What I find absolutely amazing is that a number of his focus stacked images are hand held :jawdrop

Are the dimensions you gave a restriction to how small it can be?
1024x768 is only a suggestion. You can crop your image to any size you wish. 1024x768 also happens to be the largest size that the gallery will display your entry.
Once an image is entered. Can it be updated or changed before the time is up?
You can upload a new picture as many times as you like. Just mark the ones you do not want as "Delete". If you forget to mark any as delete, the last image that you have uploaded with your username - title, will be the one that counts and all others will be deleted before judging.
Do smugmug's challenge galleries apply sharpening to our images? I have noticed that the default settings for our personal galleries on smugmug is so that the sharpening is on so you have to go in there and turn it off yourself, if you don't want additional sharpening to be applied to your images after you've uploaded them on smugmug. Before I post something on smugmug or anywhere on the web, I make sure my images look exactly the way I want them to look and they do when I upload them on nightpixels.com or most other websites, but this is not the case with smugmug. I do not want additional sharpening to be applied on my images after I upload them on smugmug because this degrades the quality of the images. Can we turn this feature off for the smugmug's challenge galleries, if it is already on (which seems to be the case)?
Thanks Brian! Very interesting that we can actually access the gallery settings once we log in as "challenges". I hadn't even tried it, but I knew the sharpening had to be on, because my images never look the same on smugmug as they do on other websites. Can we please turn this off and see whether the quality of our images will improve, Sean?

For this round I am going to leave it at the defaults. The reason why is the images that have already been uploaded have had the sharpening defaults applied to them already and changing it midway does not reprocess the existing images.
If you can not live with the way your image is presented this round. You should be able to change them to 0 while you upload your image again, please change them back to the default after you have uploaded your image.
Next round I will change the defaults to 0 so that no sharpening is done to any of the images. If I forget for some reason please remind me.

This one is all over....

Only 3 DQ's this round, not bad but I still hate having to DQ folks.
Jambulee - Fusion 1, for out of challenge date Jambulee - Birth of a Rainbow, for out of challenge date frigidlight , for not conforming to username - title rules. :cry
I noticed a couple watermarks that are getting a little large but did not DQ at this point.
Other than the above - AWESOME round. I saw several that I loved a LOT!!!!
I think these values are only for when printing through SmugMug, not for display in the gallery...
???? maybe....
They actually are for display and take effect when an upload happens. The "Original" for printing that is stored is not affected by these values at all.
