Just a few of many I took at a local Bodybuilding competition this past weekend. I shot all of these with no flash, ambient/available stage lighting only. Canon 70-200 f/2.8L NON-IS EOS40D on 1600 ISO... Lens on a monopod, shot from back of theatre. Please please let me know what you think.. Even if its a one word response. I think I really nailed some of these. #1 is Mike Grant a buddy of mine and he was blown away with the photos so I'm really happy about that. The rest can be seen on my site if you would like to see more. Enjoy!

They seem a little contrasty to me, but I'm on a pretty bad monitor at the moment... or maybe it's all the light reflecting off of their oil :)

I love #3... you were in the perfect spot to really capture that gesture. I'm wondering what it would look like BW. There is something really beautiful about it. I would like to pick him up and put him in a different space without carpet and curtains, but alas, he is heavy :)

I am surprised with the sharpness and clarity of your photos for standing in the back of the room on a monopod with a non-is lens. They turned out fantastic! You can really see the definition of the competitors. Great job.

    Awesome shots!!

I like seeing other people do bodybuilding contests. I had started last year myself and did a couple of events (I'm training too Laughing.gif!).

    Again, great job! thumb.gif

I had the camera leaned up against the projection booth in this theater to help with stabilization, almost like firing a gun, breathe-hold-shoot-exhale haha. Then in post I used a little noise software to help with the 1600 ISO noise. Glad you like them!

I like. You got some really good shots...you should think about looking for a publisher. Did you photograph the winner and runners up?

The lights on the stage were apparently pretty good. Your friend should be impressed...

Nice work. With all the oil they put on, a little glistening is expected.

    Thanks for sharing.

Ya, I had asked the guy in charge if they would mind me putting a flash on a stand near the stage, so I could set it off via Pocket Wizard. Well the guy assured me that there would be plenty of light. So I didn't go with the flash. The stage was lit with a row of tungsten light bulbs in a light bar that ran along the front portion of the stage shining up at the people. Plus there was the standard overhead stage lighting and spotlights. Even at ISO 1600 I was only getting about 1/125 at f/3.5 I didn't want to shoot f/2.8 to ensure the body builders were in focus.

So basically I was shooting at 200mm f/3.5 1/125 ISO 1600. No flash. Aperture Priority Mode. Center Weighted Metering.
