watermark? just for pros?

just wondering, I see a lot of watermarking on photos (personal photos).. is that something everyone should do.. I share a lot of photos, but I don't really worry about anyone stealing them.. but I'm not a pro... so should I just not care? or should I care and watermark... something I've been pondering.. thanks

I think all photos should bear a watermark of some sort......even if you do not care that someone steals your photos the water mark can show that YOU took the photo......because you as a non pro probably do take some fantastic shots......and JoeTheif steals your image and sells it or uses it as his/her own......but if it is properly watermarked that makes it much harder.......I use a web address for my mark at this time.....that way if JoeTheif steals an image at least then I can get some advertising for the stolen work.

You can watermark in photoshop but I think watermarking in Smugmug is Power/Pro only, in fact.. all the cool stuff is =(

I don't bother with all that though, we own the copyright. But then, my shots really aren't anything anyone would want to steal

I never watermark anything. Never been an issue.

Also, LR 3 has a kick-butt watermarking feature in it. Been switching to that from the SM watermarking because of the quirks with SM watermarking.

I don't know about that, there are certainly a few quirks with it--nothing major though. LR3 cures all of that with their own tool. It's quite nice I must say.

As a regular contributor to wikipedia, due to the licensing agreement, people are allowed to take and use my imagery, provided they give credit.

I have found my Deer photo on a .de site and they gave me credit. Also some nice person came over from wiki-p and left a nice note on my about me page~

So watermarking is very useful if you HAVE to be certain everyone knows it is yours, or you worry over theft...but some of us play in an entirely different world~

Batch watermarking is discussed here. It's for CS3, but should work the same.
