temporarily disabling my website

I am planning on doing some renovations on my site. While I am working on this, I don't want it to be accessible until I have finished making the changes.
What would be the best way to go about temporarily disabling my website... or even just having it forward to another website to inform people of the changes?

Put a sitewide password on it, and use the 'hint' field to write your explanation. Control panel, settings tab.
