I've been playing with a new lighting set up thanks to a trip to Home Depot earlier today. Can someone give me feedback on these three?

Here are two more from the same shooting session. The more I look at these, the more unobjective I am about them and not really trusting my sense of whether they are worthy images. ne_nau.gif

Are #4 and #5 apple stalks?

But I have to say I prefer #1 more than the others. I love the dof on this one.

I agree. Like the details in #1 - looks like a cookie?

Thank you bsgreen and velvet-art for your comments. The first one is my favorite too. It's not a cookie or other edible treat. The apple core/stem pics are probably too obviously apple core/stems.

Thanks Tatiana. I was worried it didn't have a focal area...but do like the swirl pattern and colors in the image. I have several other shots of this subject that were less abstract, but not as interesting.

I have successfully avoided a ton of tasks I don't want to do by becoming obsessed with this challenge. mwink.gif I'm learning a lot about my camera, the extension tubes I have, and lighting setups...but still just a total rookie. Therefore, the obsessive drive to continue learning as much as I can (and further avoidance of mundane tasks).

That's pretty funny--I know the feeling--I'm avoiding as we speak.

I really like shot #1 including the title. The detail and colors are awesome and leaves me guessing.

Thanks Liz! I think I'll quit obsessing now (and get to those mundane tasks) and submit #1.

    Hi Tammy,

I really like the first one but I keep thinking candy? You said it wasn't anything
edible but it sure looks scrumptious.

I also like 5. I don't think it is as obvious being a part of an apple.

Thank you Gail! Nope, not candy. It sure looks like candy and it smells REALLY good. mwink.gif

There is something I really love about #2... you've taken us into this little organic world with depth and wonderful forms. The light is beautiful and the colors work well together, too. I think if you could reshoot and work on the focus a little bit, this could be awesome. The subject (whatever it is) is way more interesting to me than the other shots

Thanks Kinkajou! I loved the colors and light in #2 as well...and am relieved someone else saw what I was seeing in it. : ) I could try reshooting to get both sides a little sharper...I'm afraid if I focus on too much it might give away the subject...but think I could at least focus on the left side a little more and maybe recompose it some. Sure appreciate your feedback!

    Yay!

But yeah, I don't think you should increase the DOF at all, just maybe see if you can sharpen up some of the fibers in post. Maybe use a burn tool to get the shadows between all those tiny fibers making up the string/yarn/whatever it is a touch darker so that those individual fibers stick out just a little bit more, I'm not sure, but just something to sharpen up the bits that are in focus just a little.

I'm glad you shared it! I sure hope it gets entered :) Ah, a bonding moment iloveyou.gif
