Hi folks, first post here. I've decided to work on my macro technique this year and have been practicing on unsuspecting flowers and trees. I found this young pine cone while walking through our local arboretum last week and thought it would make a nice subject. Thanks for looking.

Love the color and sharpness! What was your lighting for this shot?

    Thanks for the feedback.

I used an SB800 fitted with a LumiQuest mini softbox, off camera and fired by CLS from the on-camera pop-up. The pop-up was used only to trigger the SB800 (no exposure value), and I have been keeping the SB800 at -0.3 or -0.7 to prevent from blowing out highlights. Exposure was 1/200 at f/16 and, because it was dusk, basically eliminated any ambient exposure and resulted with the black background (which I sort of like).

Yeah - That's exactly why I asked...The black background takes that pinecone out of nature and puts it in a studio! Thanks for sharing your setup! :-)
