Really like this. Almost reminds me of my state's flag. Wish the tree had sharper focus and there was a bit more contrast in the clouds. I like the comp on this.

You wouldn't, believe me....I left it out on purpose!

This doesn't do it for me, there's no depth, nothing grabbing my attention. The tree is also WAY over sharpened.

Sorry to sound a bit harsh :cry

I would have to agree...the tree is much too noisy now. An original with more contrast in camera (lower exposure, lower iso, etc.) and a tree that was initially sharp in focus would have made this more interesting. I still like the overall simplicity of the composition though. No ground needed...just looks like the tree is celebrating it's singularity. :)

Just to give you some ideas, here's a similar (ish) one from my Smug:

It's not fantastic, but I'm one for simplicity ;)

I don't need the ground either--I really like the comp the way it is. The sky is wonderful, although it could still use a bit more contrast, IMO. The tree is too sharp in both versions, I think. I wonder if you could blur it a bit with a layer and see how it looks. Is this someplace you could reshoot when you have another interesting sky? If you could shoot two exposures and blend them you could get the best of tree and sky.

I do like simple compositions sometimes and I think this one could work if you could get the tree to look better.

Lose the tree. Love what wind is doing here.
Zoom in on middle bottom and one can visualize
figure of a (head). No I haven't been drinking.
    HDR here would be intersting.
