I rented the Canon 300mm f/2.8L IS for my little league baseball job which starts this week. Man, what a lens. If you absolutely positively need your background obliterated, accept no imitations! If you've ever thought about doing this, I highly recommend it. It's a tremendous thrill to shoot a lens that I dream of owning someday. It's like renting a Ferrari.
The lens arrived on Friday and as luck would have it, my 4yo daughter learned how to ride a two-wheeler on Sunday. The little league job will of course pay for the rental, but being able to capture these priceless (to me) images more than makes it worth it, even if I wasn't going to use the lens to generate income.
All shots at f/2.8...

A friend came over and took this of us with his 40D:
Now, I'm no 5DII AF hater, but I have to be honest here and say it really could not keep up with this lens. At f/2.8 the DOF is very thin, so focus-recompose does not work. You must use an appropriate AF point. In either portrait or landscape orientation, for kids on bikes you have to use a point at the top of the frame otherwise you will be focusing on the handlebars. The 5DII was nearly worthless for this on any moving bikers. The 1DIIN did great, even using a single lowly line-type point at the edge of the oval.
I rented from http://www.lensprotogo.com and the service has been perfect so far. The lens arrived on the scheduled day, it doesn't have a mark on it, and performs flawlessly. Highly recommended.

An "accurate" reproduction of a scene and a good photograph are often two different things.
