Any idea what would cause this poor rendering in the face?

Nikon D200, Nikkor 35mm f/1.8 G
f/1.8
1/50s
ISO 200

Setting at f/1.8 + angled head = extremely shallow DOF?

Exposure wise the light source is simply at too great an angle, the face is shaded by it's own contours. I'm guessing the light comes from a window, so the fix would be to turn the baby :D

You don't mention what you mean by poor rendering?

    Poor Composition?
    Poor or uneven Lighting?

On my monitor I see very harsh contrast between the shadows and highlights in the face particularly around his eyebrow. I checked this thread at work and it wasn't nearly as pronounced. Do any of you with calibrated monitors notice what I'm referring too? Maybe it's a monitor problem not a camera one.

I do not see harsh contrast on my calibrated screen of my MBP.headscratch.gif

I'm also not seeing what you are talking about headscratch.gif

Maybe make a screengrab and draw an arrow to what it is exactly that you are talking about? maybe we are just misunderstanding you.

The eyelashes are in sharp focus, and the face does have more contrast than the out of focus torso, but not to the degree that I would call harsh.

Thanks all, sorry to waste your time. I checked it on another monitor and I don't see the problem. Weird.
