I tried a couple of searches on the forum and didn't find anything. I'm sure this topic is somewhere and I just missed it, but here goes... I have a couple of 285hv's and I just ordered a metal replacemenet shoe from ebay that has the test button and a pc jack. My question is, is it a big no-no to use the metal footed flash directly on the shoe of my 7d? I haven't tried it yet because one of the how to videos I watched on how to replace the foot said it would fry the camera because of the ttl contacts. When I look at the camera's shoe, it appears that the ttl contacts are all recessed, and that there is plastic between the center pin contact and the outer edges. It seems like there shouldn't be anything to short out, but I just don't want to make a stupid mistake...

Thanks Ziggy. I don't guess I'll try it, but I'm just wondering what isn't supposed to make contact. From looking at the foot, I can see that there is plastic seperating the center pin area from the rest of the metal. So the center pin would touch the center contact, and the metal of the foot itself would touch the sides of the shoe that wrap around. IF those are the only places making contact, would that be the same as the contacts in the plastic foot?
Place a piece of clear plastic tape on the meteal shoe foot or piece of gaffers tape if there isroom enuff.....this should alleviate any problems.
Thanks Art,
Am I correct in assuming you mean just on the bottom (to make sure the ttl contacts aren't touched), and if so, the center pin should be left uncovered...right?
