Away From The Action

Many time when I am shooting my sons high school baseball games, the light get too low for high speed action. This is when I will shoot the kids in the dugout or walk around the stands to see what the fans are up too.

All of these images were converted to sepia tone using the built in SmugMug Color Effect tool.

TOOLS/MANY PHOTOS/MORE/APPLY COLOR EFFECT

Once I converted them to sepia tone, I would download them back to my computer and add just a little more contrast.

May be a little time consuming, but I think it is worth it.

Watcha think...

Nice shots. It looks like they would also be good shots in color or straight black and white. The sepia toning works well for you with these pictures because it shows how well you see the light in the scene when you take the pictures. #7 is my favorite of the group. It is a classic portrait shot.

Some really special shots in there. 2/7/8/10/11 are wonderful as captures of expressions in the game(s). The posed shots and those of the girls are really nice as well.

Thank you for your kind comments. These are mostly just snapshots. The only posing is in #1 & #10. Even #4 where he just saw me pointing the camera at him and he just smiled for me. I like it when they do that. Unlike #2, I don't think he liked having a camera pointed his way.

I think all except #1 are very very nice. Though you call them "snapshots", all of them (except #1) are above that level. My specific problems with #1 are that she is OOF (it's weird, though - she seems to be on the focus plane - is there a problem with the lens?)... and the pic seems slightly crooked based on the line above their heads. I just dont' think this shot is anywhere near the quality of the others.

Also I'm not a huge fan of the sepia look in these photos- especially a "stock" look such as provided by SmugMug. It's too "generic" and while OK overall, could use some fill light here-and-there, and some boost in the blacks in other spots.
