Smug Vault & Galleries

Hey Folks,

I recently signed up for the Smug Vault. I loaded a few new pics directly to the Vault. These pics are in RAW format. Now, say I have a customer that want to order an 8 X 10. They cannot go to my Smug Vault, where my RAW files are - besides, that gallery is unlisted.

So, I'd need to have Jpeg versions of those same pics that are sitting in my Smug Vault, in the RAW format, correct???

Assuming that is correct, could I just perform a move, from my Vault, over to the other gallery I created? Would that simple move force the Raw pic to convert to JPEG?; or, would I have to do an upload of a JPEG to the gallery from which client's can place orders?

I suspect I may be a bit confused by all this.
Appreciate any help you can offer.

Thanks, Tom

    Hi Tom,

If you're offering prints I'd suggest processing your file so it's print ready and then uploading that jpg to whichever Public gallery you want to offer it for sale. You don't need to keep the RAW file with the jpg. You can keep the RAW exactly where it is.

We can produce jpg previews for you but I don't recommend offering those for print. RAW files are like film. They need to be developed, or processed in the case of a RAW file, before they can be printed. The jpg preview we create is just a basic conversion of the image to a jpg.

I hope that helps out. If not please reply back and I'll try to be more clear.

    Hey Nick,

Thanks - I am offering prints. So, when you say, "keep the RAW file exactly where it is", you do mean in the VAULT, I presume?? Understood. So, seems like we're on the same page. I want my RAW in the Vault so that the Vault is used as a Backup. SO, I would not need to touch my Raw files in the Vault unless I lose my other originals, for instance. I understand about the RAW being like a negative. So, I wouldo also, then, upload a Jpeg to the appropriate gallery, so that a print order can be made from that Jpeg. Is that about correct?

    Thanks....Tom
