"Really successful" is a matter of perspective.

I don't do landscapes, but events. And (IMHO) I do OK, but it's not a full fledged "business".

It covers the costs of SM, pays for new camera gear and other "fun" purchases. I still have a full time (non-photography) job to pay the bills.

You should not expect lots of it. On the contrary...

I've not sold many photos through Smugmug. Also, European visitors seem rather not to buy photos that are priced in USD. If your landscapes are exceptional, out of the ordinary, PERHAPS this will help to sell -- but just don't count on it. I've the impression that people are bored by sunsets etc...

On the other hand, some people search the internet for specific photos and if they see your photos and find them interesting, the editor of a magazine or book may contact you to eventually publish a photo. This happened to me.. So, it's not only important to sell photos through Smugmug but to also share your best ones and to make sure you can be contacted so that people can negotiate about prices if they want to receive and publish a photo.

Also consider that it's not the money that counts but your name. If you can get your name out, the money will follow sooner or later! This is just my opinion.

So far I haven't sold anything directly from my SmugMug site, however, I have sold some privately because of what people viewed on my site. Our local hospital is in the process of picking out a "collection" of my photos that they plan to put up in their new wing. By having everything on my site, they can all look through the photos and pick out what they like, then I guess they could order direct through the shopping cart, but I think they are planning to have me order them for them.

Same scenario with another medical facility that wants to buy some when their renovations are finished. They like to view them on the site, but prefer to order directly from me.

So that means that once they're ready, I'll have to put the orders in and then figure out whether to ship to them or to me.

Anyway, the long and short of it is I think the website is a great way to show what you have, and if people order directly, that's fine, but even if they want to order from you personally, at least your work is visible all over the world.

Plus, you get the great support from all the Smug Muggers.:D

I sold over 700 prints and digital files last year (sports - cycling). Sales seem sluggish this spring, but yes, people do buy from the cart. iloveyou.gif

Re: Does anyone really successfully sell prints via their site?
I sold $100 through my cart last year. I'm an event photog and I include image ownership in initial package price, so I have the occasional print sale through my site. My site is primarily for proofing and marketing, but i'd like to sell more prints and will use new marketing features toward that end.
