My first published work was done for the Memorial Hermann Hospital Systems in Houston for their annual TIRR (Texas Institute for Rehabilitation & Research) publication, which is distributed nationwide to medical professionals and potential donors. The cover story was of a young Gulf Coast surfer who suffered a traumatic brain injury and nearly died as a result of a fall from a ladder. After 3 weeks in a coma and a lengthy rehabilitation in the Houston facility, he made an almost full recovery. He is surfing again, and recently married the trauma nurse who cared for him during his coma and recovery. I had the privilege of photographing their wedding as well.
