The Dgrin World Tour

So I promised I would show you guys the fruits of my labor relating to the general call for photos first. As some of you may have discovered already, we released a new feature called smugMaps that allows you to use Google Maps to map out galleries and such.
The Dgrin World Tour can be found here:

I really, really want to thank all of you who submitted photos. You guys are amazing photographers, and made it easy to put together a bit of sightseeing for the world. :clap
On that note, I also want to sincerely apologize to a lot of you too. As you can probably tell by the sudden silence from my end about a week ago, I abruptly ran out of time to do as much as I wanted on those maps. There are a lot of photos in those two threads I still wanted to add, I just ran out of time to choose them, find the geo-data and add it, and add the copyright information. I really did want to hit around 100 photos, and you guys provided enough awesome examples for me to do so. I just ran out of time around 61 photos. So if your images didn't get included, it is very likely that I wanted to and couldn't. :cry
This will be included in a press release and will probably get a decent bit of attention online. Thanks again! :thumb

Cool site,
Thanks for the hard work,

Just a note: I use Firefox (ver. 1.0.1) and it worked fine:D.
A picture is but words to the eyes.

You can find a Google Earth feed at the bottom. If you would prefer to browse this map in Google Earth as opposed to Google Maps, you can choose that route. (Which is really, really cool)
One of my photos is finally being used for something. Well, this and my friends wedding invite, but this is much cooler than that.
Good job Ben

Neat stuff, Ben. thumb
I am not sure I understand the plans for the mapping feature. Will all pics that have the geography data entered be searchable by location? Will that apply across users as well, so that if I search on, say, Paris, France I will see everyone's pics from Paris? Or will search be confined to an individual user's galleries?
No rush for an answer...get some sleep first.
Cheers,

As for this gallery - the "Timeline" looks like someone spent a lot of time "ocean hopping" hehehhehehe...
Cool stuff - and I'm very happy to have mine displayed amongst others' great works!

Try using Google Earth - I was trying to place some shots in Germany and Google Earth overlaid streets and towns where Google Maps did not. So at the least, if you know about where you're going you can zoom in/out and move around to find what you're looking for in Google Earth.
The new smugmug maps feature is great!
Cool stuff as always Ben (& Crew). Thanks for including my Edinburgh Castle photo :
I notice Asia is lacking... I have some photos of China and the Beijing area, but they are film. Would you like me to digitize a couple of them for use? Shoot me a PM if so.

I noticed that my photo of La Sagrada Familia does not have the city. It is in Barcelona, Spain.
I also have two more shots for you.
This one is the ancient Inca city of Machu Picchu, in Peru.
This one is the Santorini Island, Greece

I was just trying the mapping feature on my photos in my smugmug galleries. I found that I could grab the map and slide it East all the way from California across the ocean to Europe. It changed to the composite of a the satelite version with a map overlay. I saw all the countries by zooming out. Then I clicked on the approximate area and started zooming in. I was able to map a lot of my travel shots this way. It's really neat.
While doing this I peeked into Ben's World Tour gallery. It was my first look at your project. Very nice indeed. I thought it was an ongoing thing that you could add too. It would be nice if you did set up a gallery that way. All the dgrinners could contribute travel shots and we could try to get the whole world covered. Just an idea. Great job.
