The native and popular name for the Indians of the Queen Charlotte Islands, British Columbia is Haida (Xa'ida, 'people'). In Haida culture, the Raven is the most powerful of mythical creatures. His appetites include lust, curiosity, and an irrepressible desire to interfere and change things, and to play tricks on the world and its creatures. In Haida mythology, Raven is responsible for releasing mankind into the world. One of the more interesting versions of the myth can be found here.

The story of Raven's discovery is depicted in a yellow cedar carving by Bill Reid commissioned for display in the University of British Columbia Museum of Anthropology in Vancouver.

Hope you enjoy the myth and the image.

Now that's an interesting sculpture....certainly in tune with the myth. That's a great job, Jack, on the presentation of the sculpture. The handling of the lighting is particularly well done.

I always wanted to lie naked on a bearskin rug in front of a fireplace. Cracker Barrel didn't take kindly to it.

Gotta love native art from the Pacific Northwest. Beautiful sculpture.
