Cottontail Rabbit and Rat Snake
My daughter has been spotting wildlife for me in the backyard lately. She spotted this rabbit last week for me and then just last night at dusk she spotted the rat snake. She knows that daddy loves to take pics of animals so in both cases she ran inside yelling for me to get my camera. The rat snake curiously enough tried to escape me by climbing a hackberry tree. I was surprised at how well it could climb! The snake pictures are with flash and narrow DOF because of the lack of light. The sun had just set.

Thanks Mike. As far as I know, hares and rabbits are very closely related. The snake was about 3 1/2 feet long...not too big. I found two yellow bellied racers today, much smaller/slender snakes. I captured one with my hand, but it still got away when I was trying to position it for some photo ops. Sometimes they will curl up in a defensive position and let you take pics before they decide they have had enough and slither away.

Yellow bellied racer? Cool name. Are they poisonous?

Not poisonous Mike. They are just your typical rodent eating snake. They do have pretty colors.

I wouldn't mind getting a pic of a cottonmouth. I'd need to get closer to water though. Thanks for the comments.
