Raw conversion bug? (Canon 40D, Lightroom 2.7)

Hi,

I've just noticed one of my pictures (attached) shows a weird rectangular artefact, which could come from a Raw conversion bug, or maybe something else. Have you seen anything like it before?

Thanks,
Olivier

It might. Have you opened the CR2 in DPP to see what the Canon software has to say about it?

I think it's more likely to be a problem with your Flash card.

I only have a DNG file now, I didn't realize there was a problem until later. Can DPP open DNG files?

The card is fairly new though (end of February). Should I be worried/get a new one? How would you test that?

    Olivier,
I have a 40d and use lightroom 2.7 and I have not seen this happen to me. I have over 100,000 images converted from RAW to dng.

Not too sure how you could do a rigorous test without spending an inordinate amount of time on the matter. But here's a quick test you could perform: Put the card in a reader and copy a bunch of CR2 files to it that you know are good. Then look at them in DPP and see if you find the artifact. Then import them to LR the way you did and look again. If the DPP version shows a problem, I would say it's the card. If DPP doesn't and LR does, it would seem to be a LR issue, though it's a little hard to believe that we wouldn't have heard people screaming bloody murder about it before. If neither one shows a problem, then we can only scratch our heads till someone else provides a suggestion.

Not certain, of course, but seems more likely.

What is the brand of your card? Sandisk, Lexar, Transcend or something else?

There are bad cards when new out there - that I am certain of, especially off brand cards.

I will only use one of those three brands I mentioned!! Too many failures with other brands!!!

Do you format your card after each off load?
