Resource/Tutorial Recommendations

Being new to photography, does anyone have any helpful resources (both paid and/or free) online where I can learn more about technique and tips? Specifically, I'm going to be primarily taking nature (outdoor) and action sports photos. I'd like to find some tips/"assignments" to try as I go out and take photos.
