Mine arrived at home today. After adding it to my 70-200 2.8L, I noticed that the fps seemed slower than normal. Is this typical of extenders? I realize that it reduces the aperture from 2.8 to 4.0. Thanks in advance.

The Canon extenders do slow the AF to try to improve AF accuracy. There is also a loss of lens efficiency and slight loss in contrast, resulting in slower AF acquisition.

A 1D series body is the least affected by these problems.

Thanks Ziggy. I kinda figured as much. I hope this doesn't affect my ability to shoot baseball & football.

It will affect your shooting to be sure, but it's both good and bad. Good in that the extender allows better reach with minimal cost, but the AF slowdown has consequences that you are discovering. You will quickly learn when to use the extender and when not to use the extender.

Develop a system so that you can quickly remove and stow the extender when you don't need it, but keep it handy for those times when you do need it.
