JPEG size/resolution

If I look at this page http://www.smugmug.com/help/upload-photos then it says 12/24MB limit + 48MP limit

Why there is a limit on how many megapixels each photo can have? Shouldn't file size be enough? When I stitch few photos together, I get below 12MB, but in many cases over 48MP (I get on average 60-70MP photos).

    Hi, Image Processing of such large files is huge thing and can impact the service to all customers. So we limit to 48 megapixels.

    I'm sorry, but until such time as we can raise that limit, you'll have to resize to just under 48 megapixels.
