Canon 30 Grip Functionality issue

I shot a 10K yesterday. About half way through, I noticed my shots were not being displayed on the screen. At first I thought I was shooting so fast that they were buffering, however I was shooting at a fairly low res. I power cycled, still nothing. Then I had no functionality with anything but the scroll wheels, no MENU, no ISO, no WB. I didn't have time to mess with it, and since the shutter was still actuating, I kept shooting. All the shots came out fine, BTW.
Later, I took out and replaced the CMOS battery, put in fully charged batteries, still nothing.
As a last ditch, I removed the BG-E2 and popped in a battery...success!!
I put the grip back on, now, I can't get the camera to even operate.
My question is, how does a grip simply go dead like this one did? It's been on the camera since it was brand new (camera and grip bought together), and hasn't experience any abuse (and the sn is not one of the ones that was recalled a few years back).
Opinions?

The usual problem with vertical/battery grips is related to the contacts. Clean all of the contacts including:

    Battery contacts on the batteries.
The mating contacts inside the grip.
The mating contacts inside the camera body.
The part of the grip which enters the camera body.

I use a combination of rubbing alcohol (the stuff without any residue, test on a mirror if necessary) and a fresh red pencil eraser to clean the contact surfaces.

If that does not work it might be a switch or, as Ivar suggests, the internal electronics of the grip.
