Just filling in for Brian since he is judging this round ...

So, here is the official gallery to give your C&C for DSS#50

Gallery Here...

Once more into the fray. This unofficial feedback thread is a catch-all of sorts, lets make it happen

Anyway, let's start feedback on DSS #50!!

This thread is:
  • a place to post a list of your top ten favorites. (be heard, and let everyone know what images moved you.)
  • a place to post your "the making of my image"
  • a place to ask someone "how did they do that?"(for us all to see )
Feedback is an important part of the photographic process. While those selected as finalists get feedback from the judges and those who vote, others are never quite sure where they stand. So share your thoughts both in this thread and with comments in the actual gallery. Constructive criticism should always be welcome.

It's easy to post thumbnails (with help from our Moderator).

With the image selected in the gallery, copy its URL from your browser, add "-Th.jpg" to the end, delete the jumble of numbers and letters preceding the hashtag (#), change "gallery" to "photos" and that's it.

Example

Change this url
http://challenges.smugmug.com/Other/DSS-44/11173146_XPbWE#784726765_MXFDd

To this (minus the space in the IMG tags)
http://challenges.smugmug.com/photos/784726765_MXFDd-Th.jpg

Happy Feedbacking

Welllll, other than mine, which is inspired and creative and original rolleyes1.gif, I really like the rose: it is such a definitive and clear picture - my eye spirals right down to the center. The colors are lovely - it does something to my hormone levels (is a guy allowed to say that?).

I am the last person to comment on others, but ic4u's "gimme five" picture is great - human interest and composition, but the "S-curve" contributes (to my eye) a minor role.

I hasten to say that all 49 pictures are better than I could do even two months ago - this is a great community.

Not much feedback this time. I'll give it a shot. These are my favorite 5, although there were many other great entries. Tough choice. Some of my favorites I didn't include here because I couldn't see the S curve or Golden Spiral. Could be my own faulty interpretation.

I hope the jpegs show up!

Well, they don't show up, but you can click on them to see.

What an excellent round of photos. I have many favorites, and I made 3 attempts at my own entry but just couldn't come up with something original and good enough to begin competing with this batch. Well done, all.

Never entered any type of contest and it is a hard thing to do because beauty is truely in the eye of the beholder there are sooooo many great photographers here and it makes doubt creep up in ones mind "gee is this photo even worthy enough to submit?" but doubt is always there, just kick it to the side and tell it to shut up!!!!! I like that with each entry it spurred me on to think outside the box! and it seems to get your creative juices flowing! I liked all the entrys its hard to pick a favorite they are all very good I really liked the rose for the spiral.....thats my 2 cents

Congratulations to everyone for participating in another mind blowing challenge. I know I'm not the only one who's brain was on fire while studying up on the "Golden Spiral". It has been a humbling experience to be a judge amongst so many amazing photographs and the photographers that produced them. As always another wonderful learning experience here on Dgrin! Of course, as soon as I get involved in something like this, my personal life schedule goes crazy, so I will be adding my critiques/comments to the entry gallery over the next day or so. I appreciate the patience! Now, I am sure ready to get back to taking part in the challenges as a participant!!

I have to second everything Brandon has said. An amazing round, and truely a privilege to be asked to judge. Congrats to all the finalists as well as all of those that participated. I will be adding my comments in the next day as well. Sorry for the delay. My schedule has been hectic to say the least. So thanks for your patience too.

This was a fun theme and there were so many different takes on it. Here are a few of my favorites.

Vandana - The road to El Dorado: This has great IR treatment without any blown out highlights, excellent subject and composition. I like the subtle brown hue.

Coldclimb - The Watchman: Good subject, great lighting and placement of the main focal point. Great B&W conversion.

JAG - Es culpting de haya: I love the simplicity of this one. Great DOF. I think the cropping just below the eyes and having the face horizontal instead of verticle really makes this one an excellent image.

quark - Sensing Spirals: The shallow DOF and lighting combined with the geometry elements overlay really makes this one stand out. Geat job!

liflander - inner sea: The subject matter, soft lighting, conversion, and cropping really makes this one a perfect image. Definitely a keeper.

SeascapeS - Succulent: Subject matter, lighting, DOF, and the use of a mottled backdrop really brings out the Old Masters quality. Great job.

nightpixels - Geometry of Nature: The vibrancy of the colors, DOF, and framing really make this image stand out. Don't know how you ever manage to out do yourself Allen, but when you do, WOW!

I'll try to leave more comments in the gallery as time allows.

    Gail:

You asked about the lighting I used (grapes). To be honest, I tried many different things. I placed the backdrop in front of a large sliding glass door in mid afternoon. I tried not using the flash, but surprisingly, the natural light alone was too harsh. I ended up using the external flash on different settings until I got what I wanted. I think I ended up on the low light end and adjusted contrast and brightness. That's about as technical as I get.

It's a very plain shot, but one where I really worked to get the composition right. Said differently, an attempt at having composition drive content. Thanks for the kind comments in the gallery.
