I am the last person to comment on others, but ic4u's "gimme five" picture is great - human interest and composition, but the "S-curve" contributes (to my eye) a minor role.
I hasten to say that all 49 pictures are better than I could do even two months ago - this is a great community.
I hope the jpegs show up!
Well, they don't show up, but you can click on them to see.

Never entered any type of contest and it is a hard thing to do because beauty is truely in the eye of the beholder there are sooooo many great photographers here and it makes doubt creep up in ones mind "gee is this photo even worthy enough to submit?" but doubt is always there, just kick it to the side and tell it to shut up!!!!! I like that with each entry it spurred me on to think outside the box! and it seems to get your creative juices flowing! I liked all the entrys its hard to pick a favorite they are all very good I really liked the rose for the spiral.....thats my 2 cents
"It's awesome to be ALIVE!"
Lots of great images! I chose the following based on creative use of the theme, technical quality, and uniqueness...as well as appeal to my own personal tastes.
Good luck everyone...soon we will see the judges' picks!

Vandana - The road to El Dorado: This has great IR treatment without any blown out highlights, excellent subject and composition. I like the subtle brown hue.
Coldclimb - The Watchman: Good subject, great lighting and placement of the main focal point. Great B&W conversion.
JAG - Es culpting de haya: I love the simplicity of this one. Great DOF. I think the cropping just below the eyes and having the face horizontal instead of verticle really makes this one an excellent image.
quark - Sensing Spirals: The shallow DOF and lighting combined with the geometry elements overlay really makes this one stand out. Geat job!
liflander - inner sea: The subject matter, soft lighting, conversion, and cropping really makes this one a perfect image. Definitely a keeper.
SeascapeS - Succulent: Subject matter, lighting, DOF, and the use of a mottled backdrop really brings out the Old Masters quality. Great job.
nightpixels - Geometry of Nature: The vibrancy of the colors, DOF, and framing really make this image stand out. Don't know how you ever manage to out do yourself Allen, but when you do, WOW!
I'll try to leave more comments in the gallery as time allows.

You asked about the lighting I used (grapes). To be honest, I tried many different things. I placed the backdrop in front of a large sliding glass door in mid afternoon. I tried not using the flash, but surprisingly, the natural light alone was too harsh. I ended up using the external flash on different settings until I got what I wanted. I think I ended up on the low light end and adjusted contrast and brightness. That's about as technical as I get.

It's a very plain shot, but one where I really worked to get the composition right. Said differently, an attempt at having composition drive content. Thanks for the kind comments in the gallery.
