Did you plan to do that with those shots? I shoot a lot of R/C car racing and would like to implement some effects like that just because it looks cool and has an awesome impact. I took three pics that I took at a race recently where I kind of hand stitched them together and duplicated this effect however if just did not turn out exactly right. There was panning involved in my shots and it looks a little tweaked.
I am going to setup a tripod and a wide angle lens parallel to a jump this weekend and see what I can some up with.
I shot a few wrestling events on my own just to see how I'd do. Before wrestling I had shot dozens of boxing, kickboxing, and MMA events, so figured it would be similar. Not exactly.
First, I needed to shoot much wider than traditional Combat Sports due to the nature of the action. Second, this venue is very dark. I have bright primes, but the wrong focal length. That meant I'd be using my Tamron 17-50 using a flash. The only problem was I only had a pop-up flash. It would've been fine had I only taken a few shots here and there, but now I was waiting for the flash to recycle and missing opportunities. I decided on the Speedlite 430EX II as my 7D could use it's pop-up flash to wirelessly trigger the Speedlite, in effect giving me more creative opportunities, but also because I tested it, and found I could fire off 20 (or more) flashes in rapid succession- a task impossible with the built-in flash- and it lets me keep up with the action at aprox 5fps. So, to answer your question, no, I didn't exactly take those shots with the intent of merging them, but I did choose my current set-up for the speed I knew I'd need, allowing me to take shots like that.
Sounds good! Thanks for the insight! Ya, the majority of what I have been shooting for R/C has been outdoors so the flash is not an issue but I fear the fps of my XSi might be. I am looking into a 7D in the future so I will see. I will be doing some playing at a track this weekend. You will see a post from me on here in less than a week attempting the technique you presented here.
So as not to hijack your thread anymore, I will PM you the merge I did yesterday to see if you can hand down pointers.

It's not something I do often, but I figured it would be appropriate for this shot as I didn't think posting all 4 pics would have the same impact.

Thanks again for the info.
