The Plains Rally 2010 in Wales. Tried a few different angles from my usual ones this time. I'm struggling to find new ways of showing these things because the viewing points are so restricted.

Lastly, the set wouldn't be complete without a shot of Andy Burton and his Peugeot Cosworth. That thing sounds immense! Like a F1 car!

wow.. nice shots. No rocks take out a lens... or a spectator for that matter?

It has been close in the past! It's easier to get better angles in poor weather sometimes because at least then it is mostly mud that flies. I came close to wrecking a $14k broadcast lens on my video camera once. The rock hit the viewfinder enclosure instead luckily!

I agree, Do you buy UV filters by the case. How badly do you get sprayed with rocks?

The rocks aren't much of a problem. Most of the time if I am anywhere on the outside of a corner I am shooting telephoto because it is one of the most dangerous places to be. I'm always in a position where I have somewhere to go if something goes wrong. I prefer to be on the inside of the corner because as the cars rear end spins out I can often capture the drivers faces clearly.

Unfortunately to get good photos of rally cars you do have to be a bit daring. The standard spectator points are usually useless for photography, but on some rallies such as the WRC events there is often no choice due to the over zealous restrictions.
