Helps that this B&B had badass historic type wallpaper. So far I'd say the way to use it is shoot stopped down, and with no ambient light, let the flash hammer the subject.
Here is a non-wedding example. I agree that might not me the best pose and affect for her (or for this one) you have to be careful with noses, because the light is not exactly flat, but can end up accentuating something you don't want. Its a toy, and I intend to play with it.
Re: As promised pics from the Coco Ring flash
Why did you have to stop down?
I actually like the first pic, could maybe use less exposure (do you have a raw file?).
Cheers,
Mark

This is processed from a raw file, I can upload the original later. I did a bit of smoothing and diffuse glow to it to clean up some skin tone issues. The light doesn't to anything to complement the shape of her face specifically, but its a new toy and with THAT wallpaper I couldn't resist.

yeah... flat-ish lighting is no big thrill to me. I don't care for the perfectly round catch lights either. Nothing against your skills Jason but if an opinion on the effect of a ring flash for portraits is wanted, I'm going with no big thrill. Now, for some ring/flower macros (or dental work... HA!) it would be the bomb. No shadows or big glare off the shiny tile though... that is kind of good. I suppose a great toy for the guy who has everything.
I don't know about the light effect, creating shadows for depth has been so drilled into me that the lack of shadows does create a flat looking appearance to my eye.
Probably in applications other than close up portraits it would be fine.
Keep experimenting with the ringlight at weddings. It can make some super fun pics
I've got an orbis and some of my favorite shots have been taken with it:
