Hi there,

I have a problem with the screw fitting on my Canon 500mm F/4 USM IS lens. The screw is still attached but the metal lip that tightens the hood to the lens has worked its way loose and I have lost it out on location. The hood will now not attach to the lens. I have looked at replacing the hood but it costs over £400! Any ideas? I'm U.K. based but all advice is welcome, particularly from those who have had this problem. Canon won't fix it as it's out of warranty!
Thanks in advance.

Neil.

I'm betting that if you show the hood and lens to a competent engineer with access to a machine shop, they could work out something in a replacement.

It is also likely that Canon could repair the hood if you send it in. They would give you an estimate before repairs so you could decide if the repairs are reasonable in cost.

Thanks Ziggy, I'll get a quote from Canon, although I'm guessing it won't be cheap.
