Hello all,

I will be purchasing a 50mm 1.4 af-d lens either today or tomorrow and want recomendations for a 52mm nd filter for outdoor portraits shot wide open.

My D90's fastest shutter speed is 1/4000 and at iso 200 @1.4 that wont be possible even in some brighter shady areas.

Just wondering what you all are using and or would recomend.

Lastly, will I be ok optically with stacking my ND filter on top of my UV hoya filter?

Thanks!
Ben

I like the (and have some) ND filters from the Hoya Pro1 digital series, and I know a lot of other shooters who do as well.

More filters is potentially more problems and loss of quality; Don't use more than you need.

I have a B+W 0.9 ND filter (~3 stops) and a x400 / 2.4 Hoya ND filter (~1/500th the light). I never quite understood the numbering systems, so someone else maybe can explain that to you.

if you can afford it, B+W or Singh Ray is the way to go.

and no UV filter -- Ivar's got it right. Less glass the better between subject and camera sensor.

+1 on the Singh Ray. I've been using the Vari-Duo with the polarizer and love it! Fast and easy, just dial in the amount of stops you need.
