Category settings question

OK here's the scenario...with a pro account

is it possible to make two entire existing categories non-public?

I've removed the clickable nav bar links on my home page - however any one that googles my site with the word motorcycles or events gets a link right back in...thereby bypassing my 'quik-fix' or they can just type in the following:

rich56k.smugmug.com/motorcycles

rich56k.smugmug.com/events

I need to restrict access entirely to said categories (and all their galleries within)

Thanks in advance for any help with this...

If you don't want them searchable, then you have to make all the galleries in both categories unlisted. Doing that will remove all traces of those galleries and their category from the public internet. Otherwise, the search engines can find them, even if you hide them.

If you still need to privately share those categories, then you can put all the galleries in a sharegroup and share that. Sharegroups are not on the public internet. Categories are.

It is possible to hide things from casual viewers, but making the galleries all unlisted is the only way to really remove them from the internet so that snoopers and search engines will not find them. FYI, once the search engines have found them initially, it can take a long while for them to go away.

    Thanks for the information John!

Is there any way to bulk unlist (since what I'm referring to is every gallery [except 1 old journal] I have [over 100] -all are in the 2 main categories) ?

So even creating a new category and moving the existing galleries to it - not even sure how to do it - would accomplish this would it?

Finally the "hide things from casual viewers" you mentioned last would be doing what?

The only way I know of to bulk change things to unlisted is using the SmugBrowser add-on to Firefox.

In Gallery Settings, you can apply a settings change to more than one gallery at once, but you have to pick each gallery from a list individually to add them to the list of galleries you want to change. Why Smugmug didn't let you apply a setting change to every gallery in a category, I have no idea - such an obvious feature.

If you search for delCategory, you will find a piece of javascript that can hide a category from casual viewers. This will not fix a problem with search engines though and will not necessarily hide categories from mobile users.

So as it turns out I went in and it turns out now smugmug does offer the "all my galleries" (thanks smug!) option...so first I did 'unlisted' then went back and added 'password protection' and walla it worked!!

I then went in and manually un-password protected the 3 galleries I want public access to - problem solved (!!) and it's much easier than the one-by-one option it used to be (it still offers individual one-by-one) however for someone like me with well over 100 galleries total - it was easier to 'hit them all' then just go in individually and undo the couple I needed

    Thanks again John!!
