Sand in my lens

My wife took the kids to the beach this weekend and "borrowed" my Nikon to take pictures. When she came home there was sand all in my 55-200 zoom lens. I seem to have gotten most of it out with a can of air and just working the zoom, but it's not as smooth as the other lens. Sounds like there is still a bit of sand in there. Should I just keep working it, or should I take it to someone who knows how to take these things apart and clean them properly?

Having it cleaned will excede the cost of a new lens.
Just do what you can by yourself.
