Did a senior portrait for the lovely Miranda this weekend. I was thinking about what I could do for challenge 51 Tomorrow or Yesterday and this is what I came up with.

It amazes me how the Bible has stayed relevant throughout time & with Miranda's tomorrow ahead of her with an old building as a background I thought was in theme. This is a comp of at least 3 images so don't hold back in the critique as I might be able to change things. I am also open for suggestions as to what to name the image.

#2 Different processing a little bolder contrast

Just my opinion, if I only looked at the image, I wouldn't catch right away that there's a bible in her hand. Theme wise, I'm not sure it gives me a yesterday or tomorrow. But that's just me. Lots of others out there that may interpret this differently. :B

Thanks, Aspecto I didn't think about how the light would blow out all the detail that would let you know the book was a Bible. That's why I added the cross marker to let people know it was a bible. Maybe I need to add something else to communicate the books a Bible.

    hey there,
Ok I've looked at this image a few times, and I think even if the Bible was clearly depicted, not sure I would still see it fitting the theme. I get it when you explain it, but otherwise ne_nau.gif. Not strong enough on theme, I don't think.

OK back to the drawing board. I do have plan B but I am not sure if I'll have time to shoot it.

David, I like your image and since like you said it is a composite, there is still potential to strenghthen it and tie it to the theme. The title may end up being the thing that ties it to the theme, but that may be ok. The bookmark cross is very hard to see. If you take that out, its just a nice image of a young person seeing a bright future in front of herself, and the title could reflect that idea. Something like, "Tomorrow is Full of Promise."
    Cheers,
    Mark

    You Rock Mark!

The book could represent knowledge, education, etc. Cool, I'm exited about this image again.

    -Thanks for your help

Along the lines of having a theme, this is something you probably want to light very softly. That means you'd either need to shoot this in the shade or use a scrim. That said, you don't necessarily have to reshoot it. Just go easy on the contrast.

I definitely like the idea of taking the comp in an education/future direction. The bible/religion concept is too hard to discern from the image.

I thought she was holding some sort of old radio. Then I read it is a bible. I'm not too sure, even if all the elements were visible, it would be strong on theme. I've judged a couple DSS in the past and I don't read titles. I feel that the picture itself should speak the theme. If you need prose to describe what you want the viewer to see, then you really haven't captured it in the picture. I know that people will see different meaning in pictures, but the fact that there is a theme to each DSS should alone put the photo in context and guide the viewer towards the story.

That's just me though... my 2 cents. I've seen quite a few photos win these challenges that in IMO, missed the theme entirely, but are strong in technical and asthetic quality.

They are both incredible images! I like #1 slightly better...I wish the bible were more prominent, however. It would be much more on-theme with that highlighted more, but it still works very well with the light emerging from her lap. It just requires slightly more attention to the image to learn the meaning. Love it though. Nice job!

Thanks everyone, for the help! I made the cross bigger and softened the image a little and adjusted the crop. I title this Tomorrows Hope.
