Hi. I dropped in to the stable where my horse is living and caught a couple of classes in a show they were hosting. This is a 3' speed class and this young mare is in training - and showing some great potential I think.

A dark horse against a dark background is always tough to get - but c&c is appreciated.

Cropping out the jump standard on the right side of the frame is something that bugged me as I looked at this image.. The image itself is nice and clear, good work on that, but it seems a little "hot" in places and you've lost detail in some of the areas of the background and highlights.

Maybe you could center the horse in your crop a bit more. Not sure if this was how you took the shot, but it doesn't bother me so much..

I actually find it easier to get the horse exposed correctly when I put them in front of a darkly leaved tree, even when I use center weighted metering. You might even raise the contrast on this a bit to enrichen the horse.

I'm not sure how you set this up, but also now that you are finally outdoors, you might now switch to aperture priority at perhaps f3.5 or f4, and let the shutter speed float to the really fast if need be... With this image it looks like what one of my shooters always does, setting up at shutter priority at 1/1000, and so his f is floating all day long to really narrow apertures. It lends to such a deep dof that I can't tell what he was intending to shoot. Everything is so in focus that it seems to be almost not quite in focus..

Maybe I make sense, maybe not!!rolleyes1.gif

Thanks for the comments, folks. I'll play with it and post the 'revised' version - along with the set up details.

I was totally in manual for both aperture and shutter speed. My biggest problem all morning was being over exposed because I'm so used to trying to shoot in a tunnelrolleyes1.gif

Hoofclix - do you recommend Av priority over Shutter priority outdoors? I was concerned about shutter speed and it was set at 1/500. I was using the 70-200mm f/2.8 with a 2x extender and a filter so I lost a couple of stops on the Av side of things. Fortunately, this one wasn't a paying gig so I was experimenting a lot mwink.gif

I'll get back to you. Thanks again.
