What are these bugs?

Are these copulating bugs what people call "bee flies?" I thought they were bumblebees until I saw the eyes and antennae, which are fly-like.
Single shot, 50D, 100mm macro + 36 mm tube, handheld, 1/200, f/13, flash.
This was a hard one, as you can tell from the slightly out of focus antennae. I saw them fly into a dark hole in a stone wall, about 1 foot off the ground. Couldn't see much, and there was no way to brace against anything quickly enough. And these critters, unlike some bugs, were not still when they were copulating (as you can see from the wings). I got four shots off before they flew away, and this was the best of the bunch.
