Which lens for a Sony user?

I've been using the A100 for about 5 years. Just recently upgraded to the full-frame A850. I love it!! I have (for the A100) a 17-50f2.8 Tamron, a 70-200 4.5-5.6 Sony, and a Sony 50mm f1.4. The Tamron doesn't work on the full frame, so I'm looking for a wide angle for the A850. I am looking at the Sony Carl Zeiss 16-35 f2.8 or the Sony Carl Zeiss 24-70 f2.8. I am also in love with the Zeiss 85mm f1.4. I've rented it several times and love it, but now feel like, with the new camera, I really should get a wide angle.

ETA that I'm mostly a portrait photographer. I'm a second shooter for weddings, but I'm mainly a newborn/child/family photographer.

Any thoughts, Opinions, other ideas???

Thank you so much!!
Angela

For a FF camera 16-35mm is very wide, what I call a "super-wide" zoom. The 24-70mm would be a "standard" zoom similar in FOV to the 17-50mm on your A100.

For wedding work and indoor shooting the 24-70mm range is awfully handy to have and I think every serious wedding shooter should have a high-quality standard zoom.

Super-wide zooms are less handy for people stuff unless you want to shoot establishing shots of the interior and exterior of the church or some candids showing group interactions. Mostly I like to show more intimate relationships.

A super-wide is often very useful for vista landscapes, if that matters to you.

All three of the lenses you mentioned would be at the top of my list. The 24-70 is the most versatile, but the 85mm could be used to greater effectiveness, depending on how used you are to primes.

The 16-35 would be nice to have in your bag, but for portraits/weddings, I'd suggest either the 24-70 or the 85, depending on your personal preference.

Thank you both! I've certainly been leaning towards the 24-70, so that's what I'm going to do. I do love the 85 fixed, but I think the 24-70 will give me just a little more flexibility. YAY!

    THANK YOU!!!
