Sudden surge in hits

I've had a steady trend of 25-30 hits per day on my site for about a year now, for some unknown reason in the last week this has gone up to somewhere between 150-200 per day. The increase in hits is almost all direct traffic with about 80% bounce rate and is from all over the globe.
Now I'd like to think that I've just become very popular but I suspect something fishy is going on with google analyticals. Either it's not telling me the truth or it's recording a single hit as multiples for some reason.
Any ideas? Just thought I'd check that the problem isn't coming from the Smugmug end.

we had an issue a few weeks ago where every pageview was counting as a visit on custom domains, but that was fixed May 25. What metric is throwing you off? Pageviews? Visits?
have you switched over to the integrated google analytics yet?

I haven't tried integrating yet..will see if it changes anything.

Thanks, it might be that. Wasn't sure if I should bother switching over but will give it a try.

I'm having this exact problem since May 25th.
Do we have to?

you should - the tracking won't change, the data will be the same.

its highly encouraged to switch over. it wont reset your stats, your pages will load faster and you'll always be on the latest and greatest version of google analytics.
So it turns out that I'm not that popular after all. :cry
