I need to order a couple of new cards for my 50D. Any suggestions on brands or speeds? I have been using the Sandisc Ultras and have been pleased but have also noticed they are the most expensive.

Best empirical tests of the Canon 50D and various cards:

If you decide to stay with SanDisk (which is not a bad choice!)
I recommend getting the Extreme III cards (instead of Ultra II)
they cost only 10% more but are alot faster (see ziggys link).

ArtScott would probably recommend Transcend CF cards :D
And he's right they are also very good, and most of the time
more affordable than their SanDisk counterparts.

    I still have some Lexar's that I still use but I have acquired 12 - 8gb Transcends...and love them.

8gb is large enuff for me...........that is enuff for a full wedding on 1 card if I wanted to......
but just like when I shot film for weddings.....I only go 12-30 exposures and change cards........old habbits

I use Sandisk Extreme III's and I have an Ultra II as well, one of the reasons being that they can be relied upon in freezing temperatures. Both are way faster than my old 20D can write at.

For a 50D I would consider newer UDMA enabled cards, that camera can put the speed into good use. So that in Sandisk's range would be Extreme IV and the newer numberless Extreme.

BTW Sandisk has run out of imagination in naming their products, which makes selecting what you want a bit tedious. The older types still available are Ultra II (15 MB/s), Extreme III (30 MB/s) and Extreme IV (45 MB/s UDMA). Now there is also Ultra (30 MB/s) and Extreme (60 MB/s UDMA).
    Creativity's hard.

I have a 50D and I shoot sports a lot and use burst mode. I have SanDisk Ultra 8GB cards (30MB/s) and I've never had an issue with speed.

Pyry, thanks for the info on Sandisk cards. The prices make it even more confusing. The current Sandisk Extreme 16GB cards (60mb/sec) are cheaper than the Extreme III 16GB (30mb/sec) cards.

So the new faster card is cheaper than the older slower card! Am I missing something, or is it just supply and demand?

It is difficult to figure out what the marketing mavens are thinking. Assume that they now want to promote the faster card (they may have made LOTS of them). Their loss is your gain.
