More shots of rallying, this time from this weekend at the Severn Valley Rally on the Crychan stage in Wales. As per the last set of shots I am trying to veer away from generic shots of cars on a track and instead trying to think a bit more out of the box, so comments appreciated.

Thanks for posting these, Simon. I always enjoy some good rally shots!

#1 - it's a neat shot, but I think it's the weakest of the bunch. The CSEL (I think it's CSEL) decal near the taillight grabs a lot of attention. However, at least on my laptop, the decal seems too bright with a lot of the details blown out.

#2 - Very cool! All kinds of lines and angles. I love how that one piece of rock in the upper right (in front of the car's rear window) brings a lot contrast and detail to that area of the image.

#3 - Another nice shot, but I think I'd like it more if it were cropped along the left edge.

    #4 - Great shot !

#5 - I love this shot, but it's another that I think would benefit from a little crop. I think I would bring the top of the image down a bit (maybe just below the lowest bit of sky).

#6 - A good shot. I think it would be a great shot if you could get rid of the orange fence in the foreground.

#7 - Very unusual rally shot that I think works really well. However, someone who is not familiar with rally seeing this photo by itself (not with other rally shots) would probably be at a loss to figure out what they were looking at.

#8 - Great, love the tilted framing. The car and dust make some pretty strong lines that lead the eye from right to left. It would be nice if there was a little more space between the car and left edge of the frame.

#9 - The dust coming off the tire is what grabs my attention. I would tend to frame the image to focus more on that area (bring in the left, right and top edges).

#10 - Another shot that all I can say is "Great!"

#11 - A good shot, it just doesn't jump out at me the way the others do.

    Keep up the good work!

I like the close up shots, shows the detail well! #9 is good - but if there was more blur it may make it that much better? #10 - same as before, great shots. I always love to see a B&W in the mix - this one screams B&W to me! But i know not everyone is a fan of B&W!! Lastly, if the car was visible in #7 that would make it poster material but its still a good shot, different then the norm.

Thanks for the comments so far guys, really appreciated!

I agree. I have made a B&W of #8 which I think works well, though I may play about with the RGB mix. The full gallery that I have of this set is at http://simonwyndham.smugmug.com/Cars/Severn-Valley-Rally-2010/12443372_fu2VH#890867523_2TnLy
but if there was more blur it may make it that much better?

A difficult one. I was torn when shooting the photos as to whether to go for a fast shutter speed or a slow one for motion blur on the wheels etc. In the end I went with a faster shutter to freeze the dirt. Usually I aim for a slower shutter to show wheel motion, so this was a departure from how I shoot normally.

Cletus, thanks for your comments. Well observed and I will look at implementing some of your suggestions as I think they will work well.

I think this is the rare form of motorsport where a fast shutter helps the shot, rather than hinder it. The crisp flying rocks, dirt and debris almost take on a 3D effect. Very cool.

Two that got away. If only I had managed to capture them ever so slightly wider!

And one that I'm not sure about, but I think sort of works.

I actually liked the first two- possibly some creative cropping? The one you arent sure about.. I am 50/50 on it. I think the legs in the background are slightly distracting.
