B&W Conversion Technique

I'm eager to create more high-contrast B&W images. To date, I've been using the Calculations method in CS4 & typically modifying the Red & Gray channels & using the Overlay or Multiply blending modes. The results: sometimes pretty good & others, not so much. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance.

Have you tried Silver Efex Pro? It's an amazing program.

Fantastic B&W conversion software. Really great tone controls. But it does cost and is a Photoshop plugin. It's from Nik Software and I'm sure you can download a trial version.
