No Comments On Screen

I currently am a Standard User. Before the "upgrade" (which turned out to be very little in the way of new features for us cheapo users) when someone viewed my photos and commented on them, I received an email and the comment also appeared below the photo. Galleries were set as "Elegant", which is now termed "Smugmug", and comments were enabled in gallery customization)
Since the "upgrade", new comments do not result in an email and do not show up under the photo. Old comments no longer show up as well. All I see is something like "comments 2" and have to click on that to see the comment.
Why don't they automatically show up under the photo anymore? And, why am I no longer getting email notification?
I do have (and always have had ) email notification enabled in "customize galleries" and I have tried setting comments to "enable comment approval" as well but even without having to do that, I should be getting an email when a comment is posted. Also, I would like them to appear below my photos automatically, like they used to, without having to go through the extra step of clicking on the comment number below the photo.
