Some shots of the hoverfly Xanthogramma pedissequum - all 40D/Tamron 90mm natural light shots. Seems to have some damage to one eye.

    Brian,

Wow! These are all great shots. I've been using the same lens and your captures really show what the lens will do in the hands of someone who knows what they're doing.

The last and second-to-last are the best, IMHO. I particularly like the second-to-last because you can see the fly tucking its legs while flying.

Did you just spend a lot of time attempting these shots or did you have some trick to getting these kinds of shots? I have tried to get in-flight shots of bugs before and it's very frustrating. Thanks.

No I didn't spend a lot of time and the only trick is not to try. I spent about 5mins trying to get into a position where I could photograph this hover sitting on a blade of grass. I did keep on spooking it. Eventually managed a position but sppoked it again - instead of flying off, it hovered around close to me looking for another landing spot so I fired off a sequence of shots. The total time for the shots taken was 1.5 mins.
So I only take in flight shots when a suitable situation arises, if you actually go out with the intention of getting some in flight shots, you normally just end up chasing bugs all over the place and no decent shots.
