Slide show dilemma

I am seeing some problems with slide show mode. If these are simply going to be fixed soon, then great. Otherwise:
  • There is no longer an option for a slide show that is not full screen. It just goes full screen. (This is a gallery locked to All Thumbs view.)
  • When Large size is turned off, the slide show looks bad because it's a full screen scaling of a non-large image.
  • When Large size is turned off and the slide show is viewed on a large monitor, particularly above 1024x768, the pixelization is particularly acute.

For now, I think I'll suppress the slide show button on galleries where I've turned off Large. Which is too bad, because smugmug slide show is pretty nice otherwise.

For the future, here are some suggestions:
  • Display/hide Slide Show button should be a customization panel option.
  • If Large is turned off, don't provide a full screen slide show option. Or...
  • If Large is turned off, limit the size of the window to the largest available size. Or...
  • (least useful option) If Large is turned off, don't provide the slide show button at all.

I'm experiencing the same thing and feel pretty much the same way.

You mentioned suppressing the slideshow button as a temporary measure until this is perhaps changed. How would you do this? Thanks.

Thanks Andy. I have quite a few in my slide show that as originals made too small for the Large size slideshow. Can we choose Original so that the photos aren't too large for proper clarity?
And can we speed up the slideshow? A hair too long inbetween them?
    Thanks

add this to your "stylesheet HTML" section:

    .play_slideshow {display: none;}

And although this may be seen as inconsistent, another idea would be to have a gallery option where Large images are made available only for slideshows. Even Larges don't fill today's screens, but it wouldn't look as bad as the Mediums. Maybe it would just be better to have a choice of slide show windows sizes that max out at the largest image size allowed by the gallery owner.

    Just tossin' in ideas...

Thanks for the help James! It works great.

If I may ask, where did you learn how to do this? I'd like to find somewhere where I can look this stuff up. Thanks.

    you're most welcome!

i'm no CSS guru. as with a couple of other key changes i wanted to make after the big update, i found it by rummaging around these forums (i.e. by using the advanced search function limiting it to the "smugmug support" forum).

finding what you want that way can obviously be hit or miss, so i'm looking forward to the SM guys incorporating the most important ones into the help pages!

Since my original post I noticed in the release notes that the slide show button goes straight to full screen. So there are two behaviors for slide show right now depending on what you do.

    1. If you choose Slide Show from the Style menu, it appears on the page and you get the option to go full screen.

    2. If you click the Slide Show button instead, it goes straight to full screen and there is no non-full-screen option.

I originally thought the non-full-screen option was gone, but it's just that it is suppressed if you go through the Slide Show button.

@RachRob1 I'm not sure what JS/CSS files you're asking about. Are you trying to add a slideshow from a tutorial you found here on Dgrin? If so, could you post a link to the tutorial you're trying to follow, and also provide a link to your SmugMug site? We'll be able to take a closer look from there.
