Really? Lawnmowers?

Buddy of mine has a LawnMower racing rack on his farm and he asked me to shoot a big race that he had a couple weeks back.

Here are a few of the photos. Please give me feedback as I normally shoot insects, flowers, and my kid. Dust, harsh sun, and extremely quick mowers made this a little trickier than I expected. I had two 30Ds with me, one with a 18-55 and the other with a 100-400L. (did not want to have to change lenses in the dust.... my wife let me borrow here camera)

If you have never been to a mower race, its worth the trip. Even though I am not a race fan, it was the most bizzare... yet oddly entertaining thing I have watched in a while.

Looks like you're off to a pretty good start to your motor sports photography career thumb.gif

Going in reverse order (sorry, the bartender was making really, really good margaritas tonight):

Really like the panning and blur in number 7!

#6 is pretty cool too. No motion blur to speak of but the flying dirt and the mowers with the inside fronts off the ground give a great sense of motion to the shot clap.gif

#5 - similar to #6 but not as strong. The closest mower is clipped by the edge of the frame and a little soft. The other mowers seem a little distant to hold up the whole pic.

#4 - has a really cool Darth Vaderish kind of thing going on... at least to the extent that a guy on a lawn mower can seem Darth Vaderish.

#3 - a little wide but it does have a nice flow to it. Maybe crop it a bit along the bottom ne_nau.gif

#2 - neat shot, but not as good as some of the others. Maybe a crop along the left would help ne_nau.gif

    #1 - same comments as #2

If you ever shoot mowers again, please share with us!

Racing is Racing. Crop these in and they are going to look pretty good. #1 fill the screen with 840 in portrait and just a little of the other guy in the background. #2 I'd probably dump it #3 zoom right in on 5, #4 portrait again, showing him in a dust bowl, #5 forget 12 and crop in on the other guys, #6 maybe it is two single pics?, #7 you left space in front, just shrink it down all around. Shoot tight, crop closer. Looks like it was a lot of fun.
