Imprt Smugmug Backup into iPhoto - file not recognized

I am just a casual photographer, but I lost some photos on my drive which were not backed up - fortunately most were on Smugmug. (Following my first drive failure, I do now have a back up drive - if you are thinking you must get round to it, then get round to it NOW!).
Anyways, importing these back in to iPhoto about 25% of the photos on each of the four DVDs (eg4 x c570 = 2180 photos) are not being imported as "the file is not a recognized format" even though the extension on all files is .jpg. Some googling tells me this is iPhoto's fault and nothing to do with the back up disc as provided by Smugmug, but I haven't found a way to get around this. I also don't know which of the photos imported, and which didn't...
Having written this out I realise it is not really anything to do with Smugmug support, and should be in an iPhoto support section, but if it is okay I will post it anyway as some of the experts here may be able to help me with a link to somewhere.
