Odd Behavior: Thumbnails not showing up X

I am trying to help my client out who has been experiencing some odd behavior on the custom domain (pro account) I helped them set up. Site:http://photos.asco.org

At their recent annual meeting I was uploading images to the site and not having any problems, but I was getting reports that others were often getting pages where the thumbnails would only have "x"'s or a few might load and others would have an X. Sometimes click on the X would make the thumbnail appear but not always. This was happening on a lot of Windows boxes with both IE and FF. I would see occasionally on my Macs on Chrome, FF and Safari, so I initially thought it might just be a problem onsite. Well now everyone is home from the meeting and it is starting to happen again.

This does seem to be happening with the larger password protected galleries that may have several hundred images.

Below are the comments from my client's IT contact:

"Now that we’re back from the Meeting, a lot of our folks are in and using the site and functionally, it’s working really well. However, I’m seeing a lot of issues with the display of the images on the site. From gallery to gallery, and in different browsers, I get vastly different displays of the content that’s there. For example:

a) The most frequent issue is that thumbnails do not load consistently. This seems to be an issue with Smugmug and not browser related, although how Firefox and IE handle this problem are both different. When I visit different pages on the site, some times thumbnails and the main image will load, sometimes not. A number of folks here have reported this as an issue as well. In IE, the missing/unloaded images show as busted images with the red “x” displayed whereas in FF, they simply will not show at all or show as an underscore.

b) Clicking on a ‘missing’ photo seems to bring the thumbnail to life. When you click on a missing photo, the image will display in the main area, but not as a thumbnail. Reloading the page however, brings the thumbnail up and the image continues to show in the main area.

c) Main displayed image – depending upon the page you’re looking at, the thumbnails occasionally load horizontally instead of vertically. When this occurs, the main, large image that is displayed is drastically reduced in size to allow for the display of the thumbnails. In other cases however, (what I believe is the way the page should actually show) the thumbnails load vertically and this then allows for the main image to display in proper proportion.

Any thoughts on this thumbnail display issue?

Thanks
