Good shot- lovely capture, perhaps a little noisy though ?

    Thanks Brian,
1600 ISO to be able to handhold. I'll work on the noise, but it's a little hard to see on my laptop. But now that it's brought to my attention I see it.

I think this looks better. I've never done any noise reduction before and to me this looks much better. Would I have done as well to use the high iso noise reduction in camera? I realize I would have been much better off using a tripod and a lower iso.
    Thanks, Kim

    tripod or not
better try use slower shutter speed or wider aperture
keep ISO as low as you can and raise only when necessary

    also
    use flash

Without the tripod I really didn't have the option of a slower shutter speed or lower iso (breezy day, besides which my 64 yr old arthritic shoulders aren't as tripod steady as they once were). As for wider aperture, the DOF even at F8 was pretty shallow. I didn't even think of flash and even at 1/250th what with the breeze and my shoulders and 35mm equivalent focal length of 630mm I don't feel I'd have gotten a sharp picture hand held. Other than what I did, to IMO, the only alternative would be a tripod (or monopod) to achieve the lower ISO, wider aperture and slower shutter speed.
    Thanks, Kim.

But anyhow, is the noise more bearable in the second version?

A monopod can be a help in flower shots, and although lots of people say otherwise, I find that a cheap one is fine for this sort of use. I use a Slik that cost me roughly $50. It helps only with hand-motion, however, not with flowers blowing in the breeze. I think it was Scott Kelby who wrote that a pleasant breeze is the bane of macro photographers. Flash would help, of course, but I personally often don't like the effect with flowers.

Thanks for the pointers. Does the hi ISO noise reduction in camera work or not.

Well it will obviously remove noise but may well reduce picture detail too much as well. Something you would have to try out versus a PC software product.
